Today marks the start of National Apprenticeship Week (10 to 16 February), a nationwide celebration of the opportunities apprenticeships create for young people and businesses.
In Bexley, the focus on apprenticeships is stronger than ever, with over 800 young people and parents attending the borough’s Apprenticeship & Participation Event last week.
Held on Monday 3 February, at the Civic Offices in Bexleyheath, the event brought together 40 employers, colleges, universities, training providers and support organisations to help attendees explore career pathways, apprenticeships and training opportunities. From hands-on vocational roles to professional qualifications, the event highlighted the wide range of options available to young people in Bexley.
Cllr Caroline Newton, Cabinet Member for Education, said:
It was fantastic to see so many young people and parents engaging with employers and training providers. This event is all about creating opportunities and the enthusiasm in the room showed just how valuable it is. Apprenticeships provide an excellent pathway into careers and we are committed to supporting young people in finding the right route for them."
The event also celebrated the success of apprentices currently working in Bexley. Kyle Wheble, who is completing an apprenticeship in Digital Services, shared:
My apprenticeship has given me real-world experience while allowing me to learn new skills and understand a clear career path for myself. Events like this help others see the opportunities available and take that first step. It was a real pleasure to talk to some of those who visited about their ambitions and what they wanted to do in the future."
Maximus Lonsdale, working in Building Control, added:
I started my apprenticeship at Level 3 and quickly progressed with college, passing with a distinction in Building Surveying. I have been well supported by my team and I have since started a level 6 Degree in Building Control.
I enjoy my day to day job as there is always a new challenge. With my apprenticeship I can get my qualification whilst gaining experience and earning at the same time.''
As National Apprenticeship Week begins, The London Borough of Bexley remains committed to supporting young people in finding the right career paths through apprenticeships and training. If you missed the event but want to learn more, visit Become an apprentice on our Bexley website.
