To mark Learning and Autism - Big Health Week which runs from Monday 4 December we are holding an event at Wolsey House, Crayford on Thursday 7 December.
The in-person event, from 2pm to 4pm, will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the introduction of black books with advice and tips on how to maintain and make best use of them. There will also be a healthy eating seasonal cookery session with all ingredients provided so that everyone can take part.
The event is open to everyone but to ensure we have enough for everyone, can you please let us know in advance if you will be joining us by emailing bernadette.towner@bexley.gov.uk or call 020 3045 4161.
Black books are health records for those with a learning disability. They hold easy read information on all health appointments that are taken by the individual to their doctor, nurse, dentist, optician, or anyone they see about their health. They help those with a learning disability or who are on the autism spectrum to share and remember key health information. You can find out more about black books on the NHS website (PDF).
Cabinet Member for Adult Services and Public Health, Cllr Melvin Seymour said:
It is important that we do everything we can to support those people in our community with a learning disability who may be at a higher risk of a variety of health conditions. Big Health week is about bringing people together and providing information on key health issues. Our event on 7 December is an opportunity for anyone who wants to start using the black book to meet other people who are using it and to have fun cooking healthy food.“
There are lots of other online and in-person health events taking place throughout Big Health Week, with information sessions on cancer awareness, eye care, looking after your physical and mental health as well as plenty of online fun activities including dance classes and yoga.
