The London Borough of Bexley is committed to achieving an even greener borough for our community and our local climate change plan sets out the steps that we are taking to achieve this.

These include championing climate action by delivering on Electric Vehicle charging infrastructure across the borough, supporting the retrofitting of local homes and having one of London’s highest recycling rates.

Earlier today, 8 April, Councillor Richard Diment, Bexley’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, welcomed Mete Coban, the GLA’s Deputy Mayor for Environment and Energy to one of the boroughs valuable environmental gems, Lesnes Abbey.

The aim of the visit was to highlight the boroughs unique position and it’s green potential and to build support to advance this. The visit focused on the variety of ecological and sustainability work at Lesnes Abbey including the biodiversity of the woodland and pond areas.

The Deputy Mayor also visited The Clearing, a new woodland outdoor classroom and activity space at Lesnes Abbey Woods with free activities for families and children. The role of Lesnes Abbey in the #CelebratingBexley programme was discussed as the site is marking 500 years since the abbey was dissolved.

Councillor Diment said:

I was pleased to have a constructive conversation with Deputy Mayor Mete Coban about the potential that our borough has for sustainable growth and to showcase the positive environmental work going on at Lesnes Abbey and across the rest of Bexley.

We’ve long campaigned for decent and well-connected transport to support us to achieve sustainable growth and will continue to make the case for the long overdue extension of the Elizabeth Line beyond Abbey Wood to Ebbsfleet and of the DLR to Thamesmead and Belvedere alongside adding Bexley Village to the Superloop route."
