Interment of cremated remains - new
If cremated remains are to be buried in a cemetery, churchyard, or in the grounds of a crematorium prior arrangements must be made with the relevant burial authority.
You are not permitted to carry out this function without permission as regulations must be observed and records completed.
What paperwork is required to arrange burial of cremated remains?
An interment notice, available from the Cemeteries Office, must be fully completed and a date and time booked with the Council’s main Cemeteries Office.
Please either email or post the completed interment notice, payment may be made by debit or credit card once the completed form has been received by the Cemeteries Team.
To confirm the fee payable please see the cemetery fees and charges.
Interments are usually Monday to Friday, if a Saturday or bank holiday interment is preferred a surcharge is payable.
Please ensure completed paperwork is returned as soon as possible, preferably arriving at least four working days before the interment date. A contact telephone number should be given in case of queries.
What happens at the interment of cremated remains?
On the day of the interment, please ensure the Certificate of Cremation is brought to the cemetery. This legal document is to be handed to the cemetery attendant and kept by the burial authority.
Burial will not take place without the Certificate of Cremation. The certificate must always be kept with the cremated remains for the purpose of identification.
On arrival at the cemetery, the attendant will proceed with you to the plot. You will be asked if you would like to lower the cremated remains or if the attendant will lower them on your behalf.
If you require a minister to attend you will need to arrange this independently, or you may wish to say a few words yourself.
Where can I have the cremated remains placed in the area?
There are a number of different options available for the burial of cremated remains depending on what cemetery you wish to have them placed in.
